Welcome To The Bubble Lounge
unknownWelcome to the Bubble Lounge.
SPEAKER_00Welcome to the Bubble Lounge. I'm Martha Jackson, and today we are at Ember Medspaul with Dr. Leanne Haddock. Usually I say welcome to the show, but for today's purposes, thank you for having me here today.
SPEAKER_01Martha, we're glad to have y'all here. This is exciting to have you in our space too, and to be on the Bubble Lounge. It's such a great podcast.
SPEAKER_00Well, I am so excited to learn today because the aesthetic world has really grown over the years, and we're so fortunate that we live in a time where we have all these things available. But I wanted to talk with you just to help make sense of everything.
From OB-GYN To Aesthetics
SPEAKER_00But before we get into all that, will you give us a little bit of information about your background? Because you're kind of in a unique situation that you did something completely different before you got into this world.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely, absolutely. Well, I was I'm just real quick, but born and raised in Texas, central Texas, but quickly got up to the cities here and went to TCU for my undergrad, which rah TCU, and medical school here at UT Southwestern. I have been I am an OBGEN trained. I did my residency at Baylor University Medical Center downtown and practiced there in private practice for 20 plus years. So lots of time to establish long relationships with women and just understanding their lives and where they're going and what they want out of life too. So came into aesthetics a little bit later in life, but have enjoyed it so much. And now I'm using it as my focus, my strong focus, as my children are now older and have left the nest and able to really continue to take my caring for women and others just to make them feel the best that they can feel.
SPEAKER_00Well, what made you want to get into this business?
SPEAKER_01I kind of actually kind of got in by a friend, a friend who kind of introduced me and said, Did you want to come in and kind of come be a medical director? And I did not have a clue what to do. I came into aesthetics late. And I think that was more just because I felt like I was always running around doing a million other things for other people. So when I came into aesthetics, I tried it out. And as usual, what I do is any type of thing, and especially in the medical field, I learn as much as I can about it, the background, the science. And so I took a lot of time to do that too, but then gradually progressed to having my own medical and having such good support with a wonderful staff and nurse practitioner with me. So it's been very helpful to have an incredible team just to continue this.
SPEAKER_00Well, I
Social Media Trends And Real Advice
SPEAKER_00was with some friends the other night and we had this funny realization when we were talking that we are actually a little bit younger than the ladies on The Golden Girls when they filmed the show at the time. And we were just like having this moment thinking, oh my gosh, how can that even be? Because in my opinion, they looked considerably older than us. But that just leads me to, I feel like we're so lucky that we live in a time where there's so many options that you have to, you know, kind of smooth things out and maybe look a little bit more youthful, more refreshed, all of that. But at the same time, I mean, the options are limitless. And I just want you to help us make sense of this and help us navigate this whole process because it's overwhelming. It's hard to keep up with.
SPEAKER_01It is hard to keep up with it too. And back to, like I said, I don't feel like a golden girl either, even though I'm probably in that age group also. But I think, I think in general, I think our moms did an incredible job taking care of themselves too. But I think we, as 30, 40, 50 year olds have done a really good job, even better. And guess what? Our daughters have done an even better job than we have. So I think a lot through education and a lot through things out there too. But just like you said, it is overwhelming. It is such an overwhelming to see so many things, especially with TikTok and Instagram reels and people talking about it, where you're seeing procedures done some before and afters. And then also the aesthetic field has grown tremendously. There are so many different treatment options and services and skincare options. It can be so overwhelming.
SPEAKER_00Well, there's just there's you have a lot of competition out there. Even right here in Snyder Plaza, there's multiple med spas. How do you set yourself apart? Like what makes you different than the others?
SPEAKER_01I think I think having a lot of options is is great. I think having a lot of med spas out there is great too. But it is hard for a consumer to try to decide what the best place to go. You know, we strive very hard to establish a relationship with our patient because we want them to age gracefully. We want them to age at their best and to feel confident of how they feel about themselves. So I think we work hard to establish a relationship, usually initially with a good consultation, just to kind of see where they are and what they do and what they want to have outlife. And it with that, we're able to kind of get people onto a nice track to where they need to go. It's not a one and done. It's more let's do this journey. Aesthetics is a journey, and we feel like you that's the best way to do it. So we, I think we start with a good rapport, the initial time we we are with people so that they're confident with us. I think every person needs to be confident with their hairstylist or their medical doctor and establish a relationship. That's how you establish good care in the long run. I am here and available to to give my expertise and really help in a direction and safety for procedures. We want to find the right procedures for people too. So I think me being here as a medical doctor really adds to your experience and in aesthetics.
SPEAKER_00Well, it seems like there's a new aesthetic treatment that is trending like every other week. If you get on social media, you see so many different things. Again, it's hard to keep up with if this is the right thing for me. How do you determine?
SPEAKER_01Well, that's a great question. I mean, everything that people see on TikTok or Instagram or talking with their friends too, it's a great conversation starter because we can talk about different things and we don't have control of what's on there and what people see or what people hear. But we can also, as what I like to do as a physician is very much educate the person on that procedure, or I go find out about that procedure, but explain to it about the safety, or are these procedures actually even worthwhile to do? There's not one right procedure. Every single person is different. And we need to find that procedure. We what we do is we through a good consultation, we can determine what's right for you because what you just saw on TikTok or your friend just did may not be the right procedure for you.
SPEAKER_00Well,
Glass Skin Starts With Skincare
SPEAKER_00one thing that I keep hearing about and also I think seeing is women that are in my age bracket, maybe even older, but they have this most perfect, kind of shiny, very glowy skin. You don't see a single spot on their face. And I think that falls under the category of glass skin. We keep hearing that term a lot. And then I asked the specific friend, how what do you do? And she had quite a few things that she does.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think, I think importantly, we are all aging and we want to age gracefully, and we want to age in a healthy and and improve our longevity and stuff. So I think Mother Nature wins. I think she always wins. Darn it. But darn it is right. But I think what we can do is age gracefully and to to help you to become the best that you are too. So it is one of these things where you would start with basic stuff such as skincare. I'm a big believer in skincare. I think skincare is your homework. I think skincare is where every person starts. And that's what we do, especially. If you haven't done anything, we start with good skincare. Medical grade skincare line is kind of in the middle between retail and prescription. But it is, there are so many good options, but not everything is specific for you. So we, through the consultation, find the right thing to help your skin become the best it can be. Other procedures, lasers, microneedling, it really depends on each person. And what you're trying to do is develop a very good and beautiful skin barrier, because that's what our skin is there for, is to be a barrier, but also a very healthy and a youthful appearance.
SPEAKER_00Well, I have a lot of questions. I keep the main things I hear about are halos, fraxles. I think ticksel is one of the terms, and I don't know what the difference is or what any of them do. So can you walk us through some of these procedures?
SPEAKER_01Sure, sure. I think one of the biggest things for most procedures is collagen stimulation. We are losing collagen every year, starting from 20s on. And collagen, it helps the elasticity, the strength of our skin, and really improves the overall appearance, kind of helping that glassy skin you talked about too. So lasers, there are a lot of lasers. Lasers is a general term. Halo, for instance, is a brand that we carry. It is a it is a hybrid laser. Again, a lot of these get very scientific explanations on how they actually work. But what they do is they work on the skin and they work on the top layer of the skin to help promote collagen stimulation, help to kind of shed the outer layer that has gotten dry and crusty, and also help improve fine lines and wrinkles. It's kind of the one lasers, I think, are the ones that really help what you really see. They're absolutely a part of the whole procedure for your face and collagen stimulation, but they really are a good
Lasers And What Downtime Means
SPEAKER_01place to do.
SPEAKER_00Well, I haven't done any treatments in a while. And the last one I did was a pretty deep chemical peel. And you know, the recovery process for some of these things can really take you out for a little bit, just as far as you don't necessarily want to be out and about when your skin's absolutely absolutely stuck. Let's talk about some of the recovery time, the downtime on some of these.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. I think anything before you do any procedure, that's a good conversation to have with your treatment, with your provider, because that is something you need to know of what are my what are my pre and post-care instructions. A lot of things can can basically be caused like peeling or can be shedding or darkening of the skin before it gets better. And each procedure is different. Some can be just a couple of days, some can be long days. There's a thing about social downtime or true downtime. And social downtime means you can be out and do what you want to do within the realms of what we've talked about for post-care, but you can also, but it's really just for you socially what what you want what appearance you want to show to. Most of the stuff that that most med spas do that, and especially a student, are usually social downtime. The more intense treatments that you may see on videos or friends have done too are done that are done under surgery. And those can be a lot longer, up to weeks. So I would say a couple of days to a week, sometimes depending on the procedure. Our halo procedure would take about a week just to kind of have the skin slough off too. But I think once you're prepared and you understand what it's going to do, I think you can go into with a better mindset and understanding what it's going to be like.
SPEAKER_00Well, I think what you said, talk to who's doing the treatment ahead of time, because one time I had a facial. I would not have thought there would be any aftermath after that. But it was the toxins were coming out, and then my face broke out. I thought I was just having a nice facial, getting some glow to me, and it was before a big event. I was not very happy to have breakouts. So that's another thing to make sure that you ask questions, even on some of the basic procedures.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely, too. Any type of treatment can have, and that's your post-care. And that's just a lot of times what we call it purging. That's what's happening with you too. But you need to understand, and that is something that our specialist, our esthetician, myself, we can look at your skin and let you know that yes, you're gonna probably have some purging. This is a normal occurrence, this is what we expect to see, but also you are quite aware of it and you didn't have a big event that night.
SPEAKER_00So well, so walk me through. I am a new patient for you. I'm coming in for the first time. What can I expect?
SPEAKER_01I love new patients. I love all of my patients, but I love I love my new patients because I believe in education. And I like spending time sitting in a chair with them and going through who they are, what they do, kind of finding out about them. I always take a good medical history because that's obviously important. And we talk about what their goals are, what they've done, what where they feel they should be or not be. And with that, I can educate them on the 101s of of every type of procedure, too, because a lot of people don't know what neurotoxins do or what lasers do or retinol does. And so I think understanding and starting slowly, but starting in a process to make a journey for the best care path for them.
SPEAKER_00Well, I think that that's such a key word, what you just said, journey, because the the times I've talked to you outside of us recording, you use that word a lot. And I think that that's really important for people to know most of these things are not a one and done, and you're going to be magically looking 20 years younger by one treatment, right? It's usually a series or several different things that that meets their individual need to get the goal that they're looking for.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. And not everybody needs everything. I think that's the key to understand. And what our friends get may not be what are what we need to. The one and done, I think, is I still have a few wonderful clients, and that's one and done, and I understand, and that is our good conversation we have too. But I think a lot of people just don't know what to do. And that's why we like to discuss and consult and educate our clients and patients about how what can be done, what are the options to be done, but doesn't necessarily mean everything to be done. Like, for instance, skincare. I always consider that like as homework. And I I don't take this as my saying, but the saying that you go to a dentist every six months to get your teeth clean, but you don't brush your teeth between is kind of the same thing too. There needs to be some homework and starting with skincare. We've had a lot of people come in who've not done anything but want to do one of the biggest lasers we have. We don't. We stop and say, listen, no, no, you need to get in a skin preparation to do this so that you can advance to that. I like talking with clients to understand them better on what type of journey they want to do, but also their time, their budget, where they are. And not everything is for everyone.
Botox Myths And What It Can Do
SPEAKER_00Is there anything that patients come in here and say misconception-wise, and you think, oh my gosh, let me explain this.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think I think there's always funny things that come on that kind of make me chuckle that people ask to. I think the biggest thing, because obviously, you know, neurotoxins, talks are always so widely used, people have learned about or know about them too. But people come in and say, I want toxin my my forehead to lift my eyebrows. So this is where I get into education, because educating what toxins actually do, how they're used, and what they can do. They people come in and say, I just want that treatment because that's going to take care of everything on my face. No, toxins are used very specifically for expression lines. And a lot of people need it, but you don't necessarily need it as everything, or you don't need necessarily need a ton. It's a very good adjunct treatment in compared to all the other things, too.
SPEAKER_00And by tox and neurotoxins, what are you talking about?
SPEAKER_01Botox can be a brand name, but it's also a general kind of word we use to talk about the neurotoxins that are basically injected into the face to kind of loosen or soften the lines of expression.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Yes, I hear most people say Botox for sure. Well, let's talk about that for a minute. What are the limitations with it? You said that it's a misconception that it can lift your eyebrows, but what about neck and jawline, things like that? Is does it have the power? Is it powerful enough to lift some of these other things?
SPEAKER_01Well, it very much depends because it depends on how people use the muscles in their face and their neck. Most of us know around our eyes and forehead, and those are the main areas that Botox has always been used and stuff. But we find other areas such as our masseters or our chin or our platismal bands, which are the lines that stick out on your neck, that you can use to soften them too. But not everybody needs that. It's not a miracle drug that once you do, it's going to spring up your face completely. But it really is every single person I look at smiles differently, chin looks different, whether they use muscles, whether it's going to help them or not in that area, those are things we analyze.
SPEAKER_00And then some of us grind our teeth pretty badly at night and our muscles are really strong in there.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. Those are areas around with the master, the large muscle on our side and our cheeks that can also help in those areas, also.
SPEAKER_00Well, what I do think is interesting about these products, the neurotoxins, is they can be used for other things other than aesthetics. Like if you have a sweating issue, perhaps in your armpits, they they work really well for those. And again, back to TMJ, it can loosen up, make you not so tight in those areas and help with your grinding.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. It is used, we use quite a lot. It's called hyperhydrosis, but that's excessive sweating. And Botox underneath or can be applied very well. And it's it's a gray procedure to help decrease sweating from four to six months or so, too. It's it's an excellent procedure to do. It's very simple, not very painful, easy to do. The massagers, the big muscle that is part of our muscles we use with mastication or chewing or swallowing or anything, those muscles do can be larger in some people and smaller than others. And I think it is helpful as part of the treatment for TMJ. It's not everything, but it's definitely can be helpful for that too.
SPEAKER_00Let's
Retinol Routines Products And Sunscreen
SPEAKER_00move on to products because you have shelves of products over there. A lot of them I recognize I've used before, but again, that's an overwhelming situation too, because there's so many options. I want to know what works, maybe what you would suggest not using, anything like that.
SPEAKER_01I think, I mean, yes, you do look at all these products in overwhelm, and no, nobody needs to walk in and just randomly pick things off the shelf and go home with it. That would be the worst thing to do. So I think it really does, in a skincare consultation, really determine your face and what is needed on your face. There's probably about three different things that I think are the most important when it comes to skincare lines, too. I think retinol, we all know about retinol, retinoic acid. We've seen retinols on TV with all of the over-the-counter products. Retinol is our ones that help stabilize the basal layer of our skin. It is the core of what we all need on our face. It helps the melanocytes, which is which are the cells that deal with color on our face, to totally fade away, also too. It is the building block, I would say, of collagen on your face. And retinols can be scary too, and every product line is different. So that's why we say we need to understand what you've used before and what you've not used before. And so that's where that's an area where we can help you direct you to get the right skin care and then advance as you're able to do. Prescription strength medicines that are from your dermatologists, they're great and they're very specific for you. And some can be a lot stronger, stronger. Over-the-counter medications or over-the-counter products, I think there's a lot of good stuff out there. I think it's not as strong and it may not be able to penetrate the skin as well, too. But there is a lot of choices over the counter that can be done. The medical grade skincare line is a little more expensive, but yet if you get the right products for your face, it can make a huge difference.
SPEAKER_00Well, I'm glad to hear you say that because I was going to ask you, is more expensive necessarily better? Because there's a specific vitamin C serum that is just all over social media that is over the counter and supposed to be really good. So I like to hear that you said there are some good ones out there, perhaps not as strong as the others.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely too. And I think it just depends on not every vitamin C is for every face, also, too. We always in a skincare consultation like to know what products you're doing over the counter or prescription or medical grade, so we can understand what they are and build from it. We'd say, don't go home and throw everything out. Let's figure out what products work for you and which ones have done well, but other products that may be not doing the best for your skin.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00I want to talk to you about retinals. I assume that retin A and the generic tretnoa that falls into that category. I've had a prescription for years. I never can get past the whole red flaky thing. So I give up. But most people that have amazing skin tell me that they use it. How do you push through that?
SPEAKER_01You know, that's that's the hard part. And I think that's where medical grade skincare lines have really adapted retinols into retinoids or variations of retinoic acid so that a person can use it every single day, still get the benefits, though a little slower, but still get the good benefits too. I have found my patients do better if they have a routine that they do every night, not once a week. Yes, hard retinoic acid, that is prescription strength, is very, very strong and it takes a long time to get acclimated, which unfortunately most patients stop in the middle of it too. So I always like to find a skincare regimen and especially to help support the skin, but something that they can do almost daily. So it's a routine.
SPEAKER_00Let me ask you about another social media trend. A couple of years ago, there was this huge thing about elementary school girls and skincare and like. Pressuring their moms to buy them, you know, this expensive all these products. Is it ever too early to start treatment?
SPEAKER_01Well, I don't think it's ever too early to start treatment, but depending on what it is, I think education. I have found with our younger girls who do come in for skincare consultations, which we love to see, have too many products. And because they see them and their friends see them. And so because of that, that's where we have to back off to understand because sometimes they can cause more problems than actually help. And they cost a lot of money. I know as moms, you're amazed at what person can spend at Sephora. So I think that's one thing too. So I think one of the fallbacks is people who do think they need too much on their face, too, because there's very specific and ways to simplify your skincare regimen to get the best out of your skin.
SPEAKER_00Well, that definitely happened with my daughter, who's now in her 20s. Our dermatologist literally said, with you, less is more. Let's back off on all these things. Yeah, it's so easy to feel the pressure. But let's talk about sunscreen because my generation, I don't even know if it was invented yet. You know, we did the whole baby oil and iodine and the the mirror to get more sun. You literally couldn't be tan enough back then.
SPEAKER_01Oh, absolutely. And I have lots of sun damage from all those years we did that too. So I think this gets back into that our kids do better than we did, but we probably did better than our moms did too. Number one skincare product is sunscreen. And sunscreen every single day. I mean, the sun is there and does provide some incredible healthy benefits like producing vitamin D. Those are great things too. But the reality is chronic sun exposure. We're in Dallas, Texas. We are it's always sunny here or almost always sunny here. So there's always sun exposure. So even just walking from your building to your car, it is sun exposure. That is the biggest ager of our face. No questions asked to. So even though you and I probably didn't wear enough sunscreen now too, I work hard to wear sunscreen every single day, even if I don't even think I'm gonna be outside. These blue lights, all the lighting that we're under too, can also cause a lot of inflammation and exposure to our face, too. That's the bad part.
SPEAKER_00Okay, well, get out there and get your sunscreen.
