SPEAKER_07Welcome to the Bubble Lounge. I'm Martha Jackson. And when you think of the Scotsmen, you probably picture them sprinting across the field waving flags. But that's just the beginning. The truth is there's so much more to being a Scotsman. And in this episode, we're going to pull back the curtain to share it all. The Scotsmen are a tradition that's bigger than most people realize. Today you'll hear directly from the five guys who bring the noise, the energy, and the spirit every single week. Guys, welcome to the show. Well, let's start with you, Woods, and introduce yourself.

Tyler Thriller: On-Field Perspective
SPEAKER_07So everyone knows you guys being out on the field, and I can't even imagine what last week at Tyler was like. There was so much back and forth. There was a point in time where I thought Highland Park had it in the bag. And then we went back and Tyler had it. I thought there's no way in the world that this is ever going to happen for Highland Park. Then we end up winning 70 70 to 67. What was that like being out on the field, guys?
SPEAKER_05I definitely think it was pretty exciting. I mean, we at especially at the part of the field we were at, um, and the touchdowns that came by us. We got to see all the players and even they got really up on our face and everything. And it was super exciting. And it was a really high-scoring game, too. So it was like it got kind of tiring towards the end, and it was just overall just a really like very, very exciting game.
SPEAKER_01Um, yeah, to go on that, uh, one of our good friends, Thomas Cook, at the end of the game, got that strip sack. So, I mean, we all ran up to him, and the end zone's so close to hit to us. So after score, um, it's really fun, and the weather wasn't too bad. It felt pretty good outside, so uh a lot of runs. Like the first game's really hot, so it wasn't too tiring for sure.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's nice because we have like a pretty good relationship with most of the guys on the team. So like it's easy for us to get hype and like interact with them. So I feel like we probably do a better job of that than other groups, and it's just cool because they hype us up and we hype them up. It's just we have good back and forth with them.
SPEAKER_05Sorry, I will say though, um, the one bad thing though was the two and a half hour drive out there, but it was definitely it was definitely worth it for um how exciting the game was.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, it was definitely an exciting game.
What A Scotsman Really Is
SPEAKER_07Well, not everyone knows what a Scotsman is, so can somebody just walk us through what exactly one is?
SPEAKER_02Um, a lot of people kind of think we're like male cheerleaders, but I wouldn't really say that. Um I know it like started as that, but it's like transitioned like I think since 2000 into something where like we're like kind of the hype men of the school. Like we've run the pep rally, we've run the flags, and we do a lot of other things like just around the school. And so like within the school, I don't feel like people think of us like that. People just think of us as just like uh just like hype men. And you know, it's it's definitely like a lot of fun, and it's something that's transitioned into something that's really cool in my respected tradition at Helen Park.
SPEAKER_07Well, I know it's a lot of fun, but I've also heard it's pretty hard to get to this point, actually get selected. So can you walk us through the process, just how it happens, how how you apply, if that's how it works, the video that I've heard that you guys do, the whole process.
Selection: Forms, Video, Interview
SPEAKER_05So the process works is every year around like February and March. They have a Google classroom that you can join, and it's associated with the AP, which this year is Mrs. Avicus, and um the cheerleading director, Mrs. Barnes, and the sponsor for Scotsman, Coach Poland. And they have like a bunch of forms that you do, and they basically they check your transcript and they have you fill out a Google form as well as they have you do certain things like you have to make a video and you have to come in for an interview where it's about 15-20 minutes. And based off that, plus the student body votes is how you can become a Scotsman.
SPEAKER_07So you actually produce a video outside of the tryouts, and that is what people watch?
SPEAKER_05Yes. Um, so on one of the last pep rallies of the year before spring break, that Friday you wait in your class and you watch the videos that the Scotsman have made and you vote on a Google form uh through an email.
Inside The Tryout Videos
SPEAKER_07Okay, well let's hear more about the video tryout process because I've heard some pretty interesting stories. I want to know what your videos were, what inspired you, how this all worked out.
SPEAKER_01Um, so they gave us like outlines of what to do. So basically like a prompt of what your video is, and uh mine was get back like the special Scots item. And um mine was kind of funny, but I did like a napkin and um I covered up one of like the younger kids with uh peanut butter all over his body, and uh he said was like someone stole my napkin, so my video is kind of just us or myself trying to get back that napkin. So yeah.
SPEAKER_06My video was about uh getting sick and I had to organize a group of guys to perform in the teacher performance, and so we all figured out like a routine and did a performance and I filmed that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, um mine was I did it with like a bunch of the football captains. I some of these guys were in it. That was something that like helped all of us out because you're stuck to a prompt and the prompts are not the easiest thing in the world because they just kind of like limit what you can do, like how far you can take the idea just in terms of like the outline because it has to start and end in the same way. And so we all we all were friends going into this, so I we all kind of bounced around ideas with each other, and so some of our videos were kind of similar, but they all had like different things about them that were really funny and like made them unique.
SPEAKER_06And I think originally we had a two-minute limit, so that made it kind of hard.
SPEAKER_07Okay, this sounds really limited.
SPEAKER_05For my video, I did know there were some limitations, and I wasn't a huge fan of the video ideas, and I wanted to kind of do my own to kind of stand out a little bit. So I was able to email Mrs. Sparns and she was able to let me do my idea, which was there. So Drake, the music artist, has this song called God's Plan. And the music video is him kind of going around and getting a lot of money and spending it on people that need it and stuff, and so I was like, I can do that throughout my school. And so I was like, I some of it was kind of jokes. Like I gave Woods a car, it wasn't actually real, and I gave this other kid named Harbin um a Tesla Cybertruck. But I also did like actually give some stuff away. Like I gave some I gave lunches to a security guard, one of the teachers, and one of my friends, his name's Trip Townsend. He works a lot and he doesn't live in HP, so I was able to kind of get back and give him a lunch and you know make his day.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, my video was um, I basically just like tried out for all the sports at Highland Park. So I did football. I tried out for football, like kind of as a joke, and I got like some of the football players like Buck and Cannon. Um, and then like I went on to basketball and I got some of the basketball captains and just kind of like did like a play on like none of the sports working out for me. So then like I finally like at the end of it, like rooted to Scotsman, and that's kind of was the point of my video.
SPEAKER_07You found your home. I love it.

SPEAKER_01Uh, so I always kind of wondered what Scotsman was since like middle school. And um, I think we all played football during middle school and freshman year I played football, but after I quit, and it was always in the back of my mind uh to run for Scotsman. So after I quit football, I was just looking for something fun to do, and um a lot of people thought it was a good idea for me to run, and uh we all had a good group and all of us are really good friends and we all decided to run for it. So um yeah, that was a bigger reason.
SPEAKER_06I played uh football freshman sophomore year, and then I quit and I was pretty bored and I needed something to do. And someone in my class told me I should try Scotsman, so I ran.
SPEAKER_02Um for me, like my freshman year, I saw those guys, uh Pitzer, Carter Moreland, uh they were a really good group, and um so that just kind of like inspired me. Those guys were really good. And then once it got um shut down our sophomore year, it just bec kind of became a thing where I think all of us in the back of our heads were like wanting to bring it back to what it was before. And so I think that was a big reason why I tried out for sure.
SPEAKER_05For me, I had played football all the way since I was in fifth grade,
The Moment We Got The Email
SPEAKER_05and uh that entire time all I wanted to do was be on varsity. And once I got to varsity my junior year, I stopped really liking it and I lost the fun that I once had for the sport. And so I decided that, you know, kind of previously in the prior years, people had told me you should run for Scotsman, you should run for Scotsman. And I was a little iffy about it, but I decided that I was gonna have a lot more fun doing that than playing football and not really having fun. So I decided to do that for my senior year.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I'm kind of along the same lines as Jacob and Graham and Woods. I played football, but like I was really bad at it. And you know, it just wasn't for me. So I decided to run for I kind of knew I was gonna run for Scotsman like sophomore year. Like I kind of always wanted to do it. So yeah.
SPEAKER_07Okay, well, I always like to hear uh the story behind when when people got the news, when they got um the news that they were going to be on the team or the captains, and in your case, the Scotsman. How did you find out and how did you feel?
SPEAKER_01So we find out the news um from an email right after school, right after uh eighth period. And uh you're kind of just like in anticipating it all day because everyone's kind of asking like how you're feeling and all this stuff. But um, I was actually at home by myself. Uh I was in my room and just kind of we had a group chat of all the people that are running and uh we're just kind of texting about it. But um, yeah, so I got an email, I was just waiting for the email, which is kind of crazy. But I got the email and um checked and I definitely screamed a lot. Uh no one was home, so I bet some of the neighbors heard me for sure. Uh huh. But um, yeah, I FaceTimed my uh my family group chat and they're all super happy for me, and my mom was super happy for me, and uh then we uh texted all of us five and started uh say let's do something and get together, so yeah.
SPEAKER_06Uh I was with my parents in my living room and I think they sent the email out a couple minutes late, so that was pretty nerve-wracking, and I remember I forgot a text on the group chat for like a couple minutes after, and so everyone was wondering like if I got it or if Trey got it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, um for me it was I think for all of us like really stressful because we did the videos I think on Wednesday or Tuesday and we got out on Thursday and that was when the results came out. So there was like
Time Commitment & Year-Round Work
SPEAKER_02a day that we were at school and we just had to like think about it and have no idea who got it and just listen to like everybody talk about it because it was a big talking point. But um, once we once I got the email, uh you know, like everyone's going crazy. My mom's like over there, like pretty much in tears, like it was a whole whole thing. And then I remember all of us were texting, like Jacob said, like it took him a minute to text, so we're all freaking out because they don't send the roster, so we didn't know if he got it or if another person got it because we kind of knew the group that we we wanted because we've all been friends for so long. So that was kind of the thing for us, and we all got together and just hung out and talked about it, and it was you know a really fun night.
SPEAKER_05For me, when I found out I was actually at a track meet with all my buddies, and we were in this really big like 12-person tent and we were all sitting around, and I remember just constantly refreshing and refreshing my emails, and eventually when I found out like we all were going really hype in the tent, and like the tent broke and like fell down on us. So it was a pretty exciting moment.
SPEAKER_04Um, yeah, I was actually I had we had a golf team bonding at my house, so I had a couple friends over, um, and I was really nervous. And I remember uh Blake Beeson just like showed up at my house like five minutes before, and
Beyond Football: Covering More Sports
SPEAKER_04I was like really confused. But um, yeah, then once we found out, uh, I think we all got together together later and hung out. It was fun.
SPEAKER_07Okay, if I remember correctly, did you get the news like right around spring break time? Does that sound right?
SPEAKER_04It was like the last day of school before spring break.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's the day before it wasn't.
SPEAKER_05It was a Friday of like the next day is spring break.
SPEAKER_07Okay, because my son was in a group uh a year with a bunch of boys a year younger than you guys, and he called me from on speakerphone and told me the news, and they were all so hyped about this particular group getting it. All the groups at Highland Park, as you know, they it's very intense. There's a lot of hours involved. There's practices for you guys, there's pep rallies, the games, volunteer work, all the stuff. Talk to me about the the commitment that it takes.
SPEAKER_01Uh so yeah, uh before the sch the school year started, we had like best buddies and um we did one like the teacher convocation. Uh but I mean we our first period is uh Scott Scotsman or cheer period, other than JD's on the golf team, but he's in there. Um But yeah, so we usually get there like 8 30 or some days on like Mondays we get there at 8 10. But um other than that, yeah, we we're there in the morning to like plan out uh our pep rallies for like the next week. But um game days are definitely longer.
SPEAKER_05And since that first week we didn't actually
Role Models & Elementary Visits
SPEAKER_05have a pep rally, we try to stay a week ahead and try to get a game done for the next week before each week so that we can be ahead and have a good game instead of a bad game.
SPEAKER_06And by far the best event we do all summer is the Fourth of July parade in the morning.
SPEAKER_07I agree.
SPEAKER_06That's a great one.
SPEAKER_07Well, so you guys don't just cover football. I mean, most of us know you from the football field, but you guys do so many more sports than just football, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they kind of want us to transition like um from football to more stuff because one of the questions they asked in the interview, the panel interview that we had to do was um, what's one thing you want to add to Scotsman? I think all of us said covering more sports. I know we've had to do uh or gotten the privilege to do uh tennis, and um I know they're making they want us to do soccer, they try to get us to lacrosse.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, me and Graham had the pleasure of going to the tennis event and it was really cool. And we had to see all the tennis players and kind of get to a different experience in the football field.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, fun fact, there's a lot more sports than just football. I understand, guys. Well, so let's talk about being on the sidelines. We were talking about the Tyler game, but I mean, I've
Volunteering & Community Service
SPEAKER_07I'm right there next to you guys many times, and I see you guys. And at some point in time, I can tell you're getting a little tired when there's a lot of touchdowns, which a lot of times there are. How do you keep your energy up?
SPEAKER_04I mean, the the touchdowns are tiring, but then at the same time you have to like kind of realize your team scoring touchdowns.
SPEAKER_07And it's a good thing.
SPEAKER_04Um there's a few of us that can't handle the the running as much as others, but uh it's fun.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, uh I mean we're so close to the football, football field and our and the football players, and um it's definitely super exciting when one of our friends scores, so we uh kind of just run up to them and you know, like chest bump them and stuff. So that's also really fun.
SPEAKER_05I definitely think out of all the experiences though, that first game against Heath, like seeing them them lose
Traditions That Keep Us Close
SPEAKER_05was definitely a hard experience and um a different perspective, especially being a football player and being a Scotsman, it definitely feels different.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, not the way you want to start the season for sure. Well, a lot of the young kids look up to you guys and see you as role models. How does that make you feel? And what do you want to do to make sure that you're a good role model for them?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it definitely feels good to know that uh kids around the community and within our school, you know, look at us to be leaders and we're leaders on a public stage. It's not, you know, we just kind of had to understand it's not just our uh behavior, you know, at school and in the classroom, but it's also, you know, what we're doing outside of school, how we're conducting ourselves on the sideline. And uh, you know, it's definitely a really good learning experience for all of us just to and it's you know helped shape all of us and the better guys.
SPEAKER_07So And you guys visit the elementary schools too, don't you?
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Yes, ma'am.
SPEAKER_07Well, that's gotta be exciting. I'm sure you see some of your teachers from back in the day.
SPEAKER_02Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_05It's definitely weird being in this position because I definitely remember it when I was in the little kids' position, and it's definitely, definitely pretty weird.

SPEAKER_05My mom has me do a lot of YMSL hours, and so I'm definitely involved with a lot of that. And we've actually helped this uh West Isle Sim School build a really cool garden, and that was a really cool experience.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So me and Jacob have actually done like uh several times uh meals on wheels, um, where we they're like precooked meals we deliver.
SPEAKER_07We love to learn about traditions on the bubble lounge, and I'm sure you guys have plenty of them. Can we go around and talk about some of the unique things that you guys have going on at the Scotsman?
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, so every Thursday night we usually uh get together and either like grill out or watch football together. Uh so that's really fun. Just
Advice For Aspiring Scotsmen
SPEAKER_01kind of talk about our ideas for the next day in the pep rally and um, you know, make any changes if need to.
SPEAKER_06Last week on Thursday, we went to a country concert, so that was really fun.
SPEAKER_07Okay, that sounds really fun.
SPEAKER_02Um yeah, it changes week to week what we do. I mean, sometimes it's football, sometimes it's a cookout, but I mean the tradition is just you know us spending time together, and you know, it just looks better and it's more fun for everybody else when we all actually do have a good relationship and we're close friends. And luckily we were already really tight before you know we ever got Scotsman, but getting Scotsman is only like strengthen the relationship with all of us, and you know, like we're super close and it's just an awesome experience.
SPEAKER_07Okay, so we love to hear, we love funny stories, we love to laugh. I know you guys have lots of funny moments from the sidelines. Share your best one ever.
SPEAKER_02Um, I'd say the best one for me was uh at the end of the Jesuit game, I uh wasn't really paying attention and I tried to speed up and I ran a little too quick for myself. So I actually fell when I was running the flags at the end. Oh my and at first it was kind of like
Crafting Standout Tryout Videos
SPEAKER_02embarrassing, but honestly, it's one of the funniest things that I think has happened since I've gotten Scotsman. So I've come to kind of like appreciate it, just embrace it. Embrace it.
SPEAKER_06My favorite memory was watching the comeback last week. I remember saying uh with like four minutes left when we were down by 10 that there's enough time and we're gonna win. So I I swear I said it.
SPEAKER_04I said that too. Um uh coach Bullen though, our you can call him our mentor. Um he's kind of like our babysitter, but uh he had he did not have much faith in us winning. Um, but me and Jacob told him we were like, we're we're gonna win this football game, and that is what we did.
SPEAKER_07It was such a true example of Scott's find a way, right?
SPEAKER_05Also, something to add, um, and just to like best things about the games, just like getting to talk to Coach Powell is pretty funny because he's got some pretty funny stories he tells us, and we're getting pretty close to him every single game.
SPEAKER_07Well, I see him out there on the sidelines with you guys all the time. Looks like intense conversation sometimes. Also, I want to hear what's your favorite part of being a Scotsman because there's a lot to this. JD.
SPEAKER_04Um, I'd say my favorite part um is probably just like being at the games. I think being on the sidelines is such a cool like perk and just like kind of like being like, I don't want to say the center of attention, but like
Legacy, Limits, And Respect
SPEAKER_04after like scoring a touchdown, like running the flags and just getting like that opportunity, I think that's really cool.
SPEAKER_05I think the best part is definitely probably the pep rallies, because in previous years before when I've been in the pep rallies, I've had a really fun time and it gave me a lot of energy, so I'm glad I get to be in them consistently every single week.
SPEAKER_01The pep rallies are obviously really, really fun and uh just being in the games is a lot of fun, but I just think uh spending a lot of time with us, us five is a lot of fun too. Just uh kind of just building our friendship and we're all just really fun guys to be around. Uh so it's uh it's always a good time when we're together.
SPEAKER_06Uh I like doing the games because I remember being a freshman and the games were always the best part of the pet rally, and that's what I remember like throughout the day, and that's what most people talked about in the hallways and in class, so that's my favorite part.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, my adding on to what Wood said, my favorite part is definitely just how close we all are because it it really makes the whole thing so much more
Lightning Round & Closing
SPEAKER_02fun. It's easier for us to come with come up with ideas. We have more fun at the games, and it's just you know, it's it's a group of guys that you're never gonna forget. You know, it's it's guys that you're gonna have in your life forever. So that's probably my favorite part of it.
SPEAKER_07Well, I know there's a lot of people listening that are either parents of young people that would like to try out, or maybe other students. What advice would you have for anyone that wants to try out?
SPEAKER_05I definitely think that if you are not playing a sport, you should definitely do it. And even if you are playing a sport, I definitely you could I definitely think you should consider it. If you're not really liking your sport, if you're not very good at it, you should definitely do Scotsman because it's definitely worth it. It has a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I think you just need to be, if you want to be a Scotsman, you gotta just not be afraid to go put yourself out there and just go for it because at the end of the day, you are doing all this stuff in front of the whole student body, which is definitely nerve-wracking, but you just have to, you know, have faith in yourself, have faith in the guys that you're doing it with, and then everything's a lot easier and it's a lot more fun.
SPEAKER_07Well, what about any tips to help your video stand out? Because, like we said, it was kind of limiting, but also a good opportunity to be very creative. So any tips to stand out?
SPEAKER_06Uh in my video, I had um one of my friends' little brothers jump out of the second story window into a pool. Oh my. Because I I wanted people to see that and remember my video. So that's that's something I did to stand out.
SPEAKER_04Um, what I did, which I think I which I hope worked, um, was I got like a lot of kids like in grades below. And like, I mean, you get the grades below, you will most likely what get Scotsman. So that's kind of like what I the strategy I kind of took. And that would be good advice for someone that's trying to make a video.
SPEAKER_05I would definitely say be as creative as possible. Try to be out of the box and do a lot of stuff that you don't think anyone else would do. And I would definitely say to Adam Dave what JD said, definitely incorporate people from all around the school, all kind of different groups and from all different grades.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, uh another thing I'd say is, you know, once you're done with your video, you think you're done with your video, go show it to you know a bunch of people because they're gonna tell you, you know, what's funny and what's not and what they like and what they don't. And then just like Jacob said, like you should have one part of your video at least that you think people are really gonna remember because if everything's just kind of mono monotone, like a little bit funny, but you know, it's not great. It's just no one's gonna remember it. You you should have one big moment that everybody's gonna walk away from the video talking about.
SPEAKER_07Okay, I love that. This is really good advice. So you guys are pretty much like icons of Highland Park, been around for a while, and everyone remembers you. You know, you your uniform is very memorable with the plaid pants and the stripes and all the things. But what type of legacy do you guys as this group hope to leave?
SPEAKER_05I definitely hope we can be the most enthusiastic and most, I guess, um, the Scotsman that kind of pushed the envelope the most without going over the border. That way we can be remembered as, I guess, some of the best Scotsman that Holland Park has seen.
SPEAKER_02And yeah, like Jesse said, and this is something Coach Pullin tells us all the time that one of the Scotsmen from five or six years ago said is you know, you can only push it so far until you uh mess it up for the next group. So that's not what we want to do. We want to pick it up and make it, you know, more respected than it was.
SPEAKER_05And just another thing to add, like this year, and I guess what happened a couple years ago, skits were not really an option anymore these days. And we really want a chance to do it right because we can do it right, and we have a really good idea, and it's something that we really want to make happen.

SPEAKER_04Um, stay all four quarters. Ooh, I love it.
SPEAKER_07Jesse, if you could change one thing about the uniform, what would You do?
SPEAKER_05I would definitely have it be look like the overall guys.

SPEAKER_06Definitely a bell.
