This episode sponsored by Cram Crew. Learn more at CramCrewcom. And Stuart Arango Oral Surgery. Learn more at SAOeralsurgeonscom. Welcome to the Bubble Lounge. I'm Martha Jackson and I'm Nellie Shudo, and today we're talking about cattle barons. Already We've never talked about it this early. I can't believe it.

Speaker 2:

I can't believe it, but already I'm realizing it's parents' weekend for Charles and college.

Speaker 1:

But I'm not missing cattle barons. This year it's on October 14th at South Fork Ranch again and we are so excited to be there again.

Speaker 2:

We are. We love doing Live From the Red Carpet as a podcast, because it's kind of fun. We get to interview all the auction winners. As they say, like winning for, you know, spending $100,000.

Speaker 1:

Well, this year it's really exciting, extra exciting because it's their 50th anniversary and the theme is iconic and it's their golden anniversary and so everything's going to be all about gold.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I love that and we're going to have to get on it and buy some gold outfits.

Speaker 1:

I can't wait to see what we come up with. The entertainment this year is Randy Rogers and Shania Twain is going to be the headliner.

Speaker 2:

Okay, I couldn't be more excited about that. I've always loved Shania Twain. You know raising her siblings, having a tough life and still being like the happiest person on the planet.

Speaker 1:

That's actually why we're talking about Cattle Barons so early this year. Usually we're like more like September when it's closer, but they're expecting it to sell out pretty soon.

Speaker 2:

I wonder if Shania Twain chose to perform at Cattle Barons over the King's Coronation. He seems to be struggling a little bit there with entertainment, but Cattle Barons is not.

Speaker 1:

Oh no, no they've got it nailed this year and I cannot wait to see her. I've always been a fan of hers, yeah.

Speaker 2:

And just the whole layout of South work. I love being there. It really is iconic to match their theme. It's just such a symbol of Texas hospitality and entertainment, you know, yeah.

Speaker 1:

Well, I can't wait to talk to the chairs this year and just get all the details. Same here.

Speaker 2:

So this year we have the two chairs of Cattle Barons Ball on the show, and that's Andrea Cheek and Isabel Novikov hyphen something very long she's going to tell us. So, ladies, welcome to the show.

Speaker 4:

Thank you, I'm Andrea Cheek.

Speaker 3:

And I'm Isabel Novikov Haganbotham.

Speaker 2:

And that is a great name. That's all I want to say.

Speaker 3:

Thank you, it's a long name.

Speaker 1:

Well, we're so excited that you girls are here and this is our fourth group of chairs to interview for the Cattle Barrens Ball, and it just happens to be your 50th anniversary. Thank you, we're all so excited.

Speaker 2:

Well, the pressure must be on right, because now it's a how are you? Is it a golden theme? Is there something that you guys are doing?

Speaker 3:

It is for sure, golden, everything is gold. Yes, and the pressure was on, but we're thrilled to have our entertainers all set and location all set. The ball will take place on Saturday, october 14th, with Randy Rogers on our VIP stage and then Shania Twain on our main stage.

Speaker 2:

That is incredible.

Speaker 1:

I absolutely love that.

Speaker 2:

I love. I'm so excited about it. I have to say I've been to Cattle Barrens many times and I think Darius Rucker was one of my favorites, and Shania Twain, I think, will even blow that out of the water, which is, you know, saying a lot.

Speaker 4:

There's a lot of energy around her right now. I think you either loved her in the 90s or she's making such a comeback right now. And at Cattle Barrens you see everyone from in their early 30s to their 80s and everyone loves her all ages.

Speaker 3:

And we're back at South Fork this year. We thought for the 50th anniversary. You know, cattle Barrens started at a ranch and so we thought it was really important that, to pay homage to everything before us, that we celebrate our 50th anniversary on a ranch.

Speaker 1:

Tell us how Cattle Barrens actually started and how you made it to 50 years, because that's really impressive to keep going for 50 years.

Speaker 4:

Yes. So in 1973, a group of 10 women met with the American Cancer Society. Before that they were fundraising door to door and that really wasn't working out. So they thought we need a new idea. And these women wanted to do something different and something that their husbands would go to, because that was difficult at the time. And they said we don't want tuxedos, we don't want another hotel ballroom, we want something where you can wear jeans and boots. So they had it at one of the members ranch with barbecue and beer and some Texas country, and it just took off from there that the Dallas Cattle Barrens ball is the first Cattle Barrens ball, but there are now 28 throughout Texas in the country, and Dallas is the original.

Speaker 2:

Well, that makes me think of the lovely woman we met.

Speaker 1:

Jackie Wynne yes, jackie Wynne yes.

Speaker 2:

We loved her and talking about running around with a basket and highland mark.

Speaker 1:

Yes, exactly To tell the story to go door to door, I'm like today that probably wouldn't be very well received. But she was the head of her talk.

Speaker 4:

They were they tried their best and apparently didn't go well, because they had to go back and say we need to do something different. And that's how Cattle Barrens ball was created.

Speaker 1:

Well, I just love that they had the initiative 50 years ago to start something like this, and I feel like that they just must be so proud like to see their baby grow to what it's become to be yes, and not just in Dallas too, all over.

Speaker 4:

And at the time they everyone thought they were crazy to do such a casual event because everything was black time. So where are some?

Speaker 2:

other cities, when you say all over.

Speaker 4:

All throughout Texas Houston.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 4:

Midland Waco, but there's some in Arizona, ohio, California, no I had no idea, and they all support the American Cancer Society.

Speaker 1:

That's so wonderful and it's the largest single night fundraiser for cancer in the world. Yes, yes, which is?

Speaker 2:

impressive and, by the way, it is the most. I know we're all wearing cowboy boots and whatever, but it's one of the most elegant parties. I absolutely love it. I think it's so beautifully done. Just the way you know, you go into the VP event and then you go out into the food, and then I don't know everything about it, and then the breakfast late at night. You know, it's just really beautifully hosted.

Speaker 1:

Thank you, I agree. The first time I went was at Gillies and I had heard all the stories and I was just walking around and all with my eyes wide going. Oh my gosh, like they have thought of every single detail you could possibly think of.

Speaker 2:

And every kind of food that says yee-haw. But good stuff there really is something for everyone at.

Speaker 4:

Cattle, Bear and Spall. If you want to go around the silent auction, we have the casino room. We have three different entertainment acts there's. There's something for everybody in a live auction. That's always a spectacle. Either you're bidding or you love to see everyone else bidding. It just goes all night.

Speaker 2:

South Fork Ranch has a lot of history. Tell us about that.

Speaker 4:

Well, our theme for the 50th anniversary is iconic because we thought Cattle Bear and Spall is iconic to Dallas. Cattle Bear and Spall is iconic to the American Cancer Society. And when you think of ranches, south Fork is iconic, especially to Dallas, because anywhere you go in the world, most people know South Fork Ranch.

Speaker 1:

Well, even though the theme changes every year, everyone kind of wears the same thing. It's kind of the standard sequins, feathers, leather, things like that. Right, you'll see any and everything. True, very true, from casual to extremely formal, right?

Speaker 2:

That makes me think ahead and I want to do like a Marie Antoinette hairdo, with feathers sticking out of it.

Speaker 4:

We do think this year especially with it being the golden anniversary, there will be lots of gold and lots of shine.

Speaker 1:

Yes, is there any place in particular that you recommend for cowboy boots? Oh, that's so many good ones.

Speaker 4:

There's so many. So we actually are doing a collaboration with the 50 for the 50th anniversary for our members with Mirren Crosby, where our members are receiving or purchasing gold cowgirl boots.

Speaker 2:

So, wow.

Speaker 1:

You'll see a lot of Mirren Crosby.

Speaker 4:

I mean Luke Casey Pinto Ranch City Boots. There's so many great ones.

Speaker 2:

Cavenders yes, I got to say gold. Cowboy boots are something that you could wear all the time.

Speaker 1:

I'm not joking, but everything.

Speaker 4:

You agree?

Speaker 2:

You know, like even in the summer, like there's something about them. I think it sounds so cute, so I'll have to jump in on that.

Speaker 1:

Well, you actually have a golf tournament coming up right.

Speaker 4:

We do on Tuesday, may 16th that's soon, yes, it's very soon at Meridow Golf Course, which we're very excited about. This is our first time to have it there.

Speaker 2:

And tell us about it. What is that event like for those who haven't been yet and might want to come?

Speaker 3:

It's a relatively new event for cattle barons. This is our third golf tournament and basically we try to do something to cater more towards the men and the husbands. And we're excited about Meridow because Meridow is an exclusive club in Carrollton and this is people's opportunity to be able to play Meridow. And at the golf tournament we'll have lunch. There's 120 golfers that are able to play. We do have a limit on it and following that we're so excited to have Josh Abbott do an acoustic set for our after party and people are welcome to purchase tickets to that even if they're not golfing. So we expect members, we expect other friends of cattle barons to be there in the evening around 6 pm to celebrate with us after the tournament's over.

Speaker 2:

That was my next question Can you attend if you don't golf? Yes, just because it sounds like a fun time. It does sound like. No, it will be a fun time.

Speaker 4:

So tickets are available to purchase on our Cattle Barons Ball website. They're $100. And that includes getting to see Josh Abbott do his acoustic set open bar heavy hors d'oeuvres. It'll be a fun night, and have you already filled all the spots for players? So Forcems just went on available last night and I have not checked today. We expect them to sell out fast.

Speaker 1:

I would imagine so, and so the money raised from here, I assume we'll just go right into To everything else yes, so what made you, ladies, take on this huge job?

Speaker 3:

Andrea and I worked together. We worked together on a big project last year to celebrate a centennial anniversary, and this is just an opportunity that we couldn't pass up to celebrate such a milestone For cattle beer and which is an organization that we both love and have been in for a while. So we're just thrilled to have the honor to chair during this really special year.

Speaker 4:

Anniversary years are so exciting because you get to look back at the past but really look forward to the next 50 years too. And we're doing some special things this year just for the 50th anniversary, which are fun. We're having an exhibit at North Park this September to highlight our history. We'll have a golden pop-up within Neiman Marcus North Park, and so we love an anniversary year and we've done it before, so it was kind of easy to pick up and carry this on.

Speaker 2:

Okay, what's the golden pop-up like? You can go buy stuff that says Calabarans, or is it more? It's just all gold fabulous stuff to wear.

Speaker 3:

It's all fabulous stuff to wear. It will be a collection curated by Neiman Marcus, okay, and they will have a pop-up in the Neiman Marcus North Park store. So we anticipate a lot of gold. We anticipate a lot of glitz, just things for people to wear to cattle barons, mainly for those that might not be as familiar. This year we're thrilled to have a lot of new donors coming, and this is an opportunity for Neiman's to showcase what you should wear to cattle barons ball.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 3:

And it ties in with the exhibit that Andrea talked about. We're gonna do an exhibit showcasing probably looks be it boots, be it jewelry, be it outfits from Chairs from the last 49 years. Very nice Wow and that'll be at North Park September 5th through September 24th.

Speaker 2:

And will you have something similar to that at the actual Calabarans? Will you be showing pictures?

Speaker 4:

or, because it would, be kind of funny to see like 19,. You know, whatever we will, definitely highlight the past 49 years. We will have a room filled with fashion, some which you will see at the North Park exhibit, plus a little bit more. Neiman Marcus is sponsoring that room, but we will kind of have a timeline and photos and history to share at the ball too. I can't wait to see. Yeah, I can't either. That sounds like fun. There are some great past photos, yeah and we have a lot of chairs.

Speaker 4:

That have I mean just fabulous outfits from over the years and some that have kept their outfit that They've worn every single year to cattle barons balls. So I think we're gonna find some real treasures.

Speaker 2:

I never thought about that, but you do see some people you think I wonder if that's from. You know, if that's vintage or whatever. I didn't think about that that they've worn the same outfit.

Speaker 4:

Yes, oh, they have a collection of what they've worn over the years. Yeah and they can go back and pick pieces and it's really fun.

Speaker 1:

Well, you know, what I've always been the most impressed with is this team of a hundred women that work together. It's almost like a corporation or a sports team. Everyone has their specific jobs, all to work on all year long for the end goal of raising money for the American Cancer Society. Tell me what it's like to work with a team of women that big.

Speaker 4:

Well, it's really great because we do all have our roles and we all work together, and so you can call up anyone at any time and say, hey, I know you, you know this person, can you help me here? But there's so much that goes into the ball the production of the ball, the fundraising, the gathering, the silent auction items, the live auction items. But we also have several events leading up to the ball. Donor events are a trailblazers party, which, if you get your contract in by May 10th, you're invited to in May. It'll be at a fabulous home in Highland Park. Our underwriters party, which will be the end of September, and Parties we've already had our research symposium, our reveal party, and so it really takes an army to get all of these done, because most of our parties run three to four hundred people on average. Oh, my goodness.

Speaker 2:

Wow, I mean it's how do you get on? How do you get involved in cattle parents, like, how do other people get involved? Like, if you've never done it before and you wanted to, what would somebody do?

Speaker 3:

Be a member or attend the ball. Be on the committee on the committee. First be a member. I assume, yes, but I mean the ball is welcome for anyone to attend, whether you're a member or not, and there are cattle bearings.

Speaker 3:

In order to be a member of cattle bearings. It's really about expressing interest. Hopefully you know someone on the committee or you can reach out to the office. And then it is. It's only a hundred women. We only permit a hundred active spots, so it depends how many spots we have year to year, that's how many people roll off and go inactive, like, for example, after this year, andrea and I do have to go inactive, so there will at least be two spots, but it varies year to year how much room we have on the committee.

Speaker 1:

Well, I think it's a perfect example of women coming together and supporting each other, and we can accomplish anything when we do that. Yes, definitely, and most of the women on the committee- have a lot of experience.

Speaker 4:

Women on the committee have lots of fundraising experience so with other nonprofits in town or their children's school, and so they really come Equipped to take on, as we like to say. It's not necessarily a training organization.

Speaker 2:

Ready to go. That is a real skill set. I mean, it's almost like being a banker. You know you've got to have a skill set. That's why I asked, because I would be completely under qualified.

Speaker 4:

Some people love to fundraise and some people don't, and that's okay. Yeah, you can't be shy about asking for money.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that is correct, or?

Speaker 3:

auction items or anything? Yes.

Speaker 1:

Well, I would imagine most people are happy to give and donate items to cattle barons. You always have the best things.

Speaker 4:

Unfortunately, cancer has touched everyone, so when you say that you're fundraising for the American Cancer Society, it's hard for people to say no to that.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you're right. Sadly, it has affected everybody.

Speaker 1:

One of my best memories for Nellie and I at cattle barons, what's a couple of years ago, and we brought in all the chefs who had. They had literally just their their group dinner had just been auctioned off and it was just like a bidding war and it was just this big frenzy of people bidding on it. It was so fun to see they all came back and talked to us. But to see their energy, their enthusiasm, how proud they were to be a part of this and to have just raised all that money, yeah, and Kent Rathbun of, especially who we love.

Speaker 4:

Yes, we love him too, yeah he'll be involved again.

Speaker 2:

Yes, yes.

Speaker 4:

The Chef's package is always very popular. It's probably our iconic live auction package, I would say.

Speaker 2:

Well, he brought in a lot last year.

Speaker 4:

Yes, well, and that's the great thing about Cattle Baron's Ball is we do offer packages you can't get anywhere else. Like where else can you get where the chef all Dallas's top chefs will cook for you at a private dinner party?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, right, and you get to pick the location. One time they said that they flew up to the top of a mountain and asked, and I think they said I bet, and they didn't Napa before.

Speaker 4:

They've had the dinner several different places. This year it's Martha's house and then you're going to invite us over Sounds good.

Speaker 1:

That would just be amazing to be a part of that. One of the things that I've always been amazed about is just how many big name corporations are involved with this every single year, and I just think it's such a great opportunity for both sides both the company getting such high brand recognition and, of course, a benefit to you all, absolutely.

Speaker 4:

There are 3200 people that attend Cattle Baron's Ball, which makes it, if not the largest, one of the largest fundraisers in Dallas, so you get exposure to all of our 3200 guests. It's also a great opportunity when you have a table at the ball, at the ball sorry to entertain clients, because all of your clients are going to want to come and see Shania Twain, so it's a special treat to them.

Speaker 2:

That's so true, and it's really sort of branding for companies. Would you agree For sure?

Speaker 3:

And we have specific branding and naming opportunities. For example, anything could be branded with your company logo and we've heard from donors that they love the tables because they do get to bring their customers. They also get to bring their employees. It can be employee recognition, which is really huge to build morale in organizations.

Speaker 1:

Yeah Well, as a marketing person, I've always been impressed you do such a good job with your signage and really making sure that those sponsors get that name recognition that they're wanting.

Speaker 3:

Right, yes, and we also have a favor bag that goes to each a couple, so it's one per couple, but the favor bag can have branded items in it and that way your reach continues beyond the ball. So if you brand the wine tumbler or the Lazy Susan.

Speaker 1:

The Lazy Susan was our favorite, the chip clip is what. I look at every day. Yeah, there's so many great opportunities there.

Speaker 2:

I love it and so as a corporation in a way. What are you guys looking for for the cattle barons ball? Are there donations that you need or any sort of things that you're still lacking?

Speaker 3:

Well, we've sold quite a bit of tickets and tables. Really, we're not offering individual tickets at this point in time. We're not sure that we will get to that point. We do anticipate selling out and so we've had great reception from the community. I'm not sure. I think everyone's very excited about Shania. Of course it goes to a great cause, but we do have a few naming opportunities still available. Sold a lot of those already Favor bag items would be something that we're in need of and I think also to continue to build up our auction, be it silent or live, we're always in need of those donations.

Speaker 4:

And we get the big ball book. I'm sure you're familiar with that that you get before the ball and so print deadlines start June 1st and so we're really focusing on silent auction items right now, because if you have an auction item that's $1,000 or more, you get in that book and everyone is looking through that book leading up to cattle barons ball, so you want to be in there.

Speaker 3:

And our books do live on on our website. If you go to the website, you can see the books from the past.

Speaker 1:

Some years past.

Speaker 2:

Yes, yes, so the auction is one of my favorite things and I always tell my story about the year. It was rainy at the ranch, I bid on everything, like so many things, and then I won them all because people left and my husband wanted to kill me, but I bet you got some fabulous items.

Speaker 4:

I actually did. My whole Christmas was set.

Speaker 1:

Like everything you could imagine was set, I was like we're done. I have never understood why people say I won something, you didn't win it. You won the right to fork over a lot of money.

Speaker 2:

Well, but they're always such great things. You guys always have amazing things. Can you tell us any more about the auction?

Speaker 3:

Well, we're so grateful that a lot of our partners return, be it live auction or silent auction, and they do that because of the great brand recognition and exposure that they get from our donors. Not only is the auction, the silent auction, lie that cattle barons, but you can also bid online, so there's even greater reach. People who are not able to attend the ball can still bid and win these items.

Speaker 1:

Yes, so one of my favorite memories was a couple, what was actually our first year at Gilles, and we met this couple that won quote unquote. They literally came on a whim. They were having dinner. They decided to come on a whim and they bought the package, the poker package with Troy Aitman. And they spent a fortune. I don't recall exactly what it was, but they literally were just having dinner and like, oh, it was like a hundred and something, that's all Like they were, like we just decided.

Speaker 2:

We just decided last time how it happened. My paddle went up.

Speaker 4:

I was like what I love being in the live auction room because of that, because it's so interesting to see people just casually bidding $100,000 on items, and I'm always like don't move your arms put your arms to the side of your body Like don't scratch your head. But I know it is. It's so entertaining. I mean, the generosity is incredible.

Speaker 2:

It is incredible and I love that. They just said that and they were. They were proud of it. That's one of the reasons we love working. It is talking to people afterwards because you know, we're so excited about the fact that they're donating that kind of money by bidding and they're so excited that they did it you know, but to hear the background story is just.

Speaker 1:

It's so fun to hear where they came from. It is.

Speaker 2:

Usually it involves a little drinking. Yes, usually.

Speaker 4:

But if you can, but in live, the silent auction room is always popular. It's so fun to just look around at all the different items and there is something for everyone for men, for women, for children, for your home. We always have amazing artwork and mattresses and furniture, and then we have anything from gift cards to no weight passes, which are always so popular.

Speaker 2:

The Hillshown and.

Speaker 4:

R&D. I mean those are priceless items that you can't get other places where you can call ahead and say I'm coming, I'm in front of the line.

Speaker 2:

So you'll find a little bit of everything. So let's go through the logistics of the cattle barons this year. Give us like a. Like a, we enter, we go to the VIP. Like give us a little tour of how it's gonna be.

Speaker 3:

Okay, well, 6 pm the doors and gates open and that is for our VIP donors and everything this year is inside in the convention center. So, silent auction, live auction and VIP which is different from last year at South Fork and you will enter the convention center at South Fork. Randy Rogers Band will begin playing at 6.30 and play until 7.30 approximately, at about 6.37, our silent auction will open for those guests that do not have VIP access. There's a raffle, there's silent auction, all the food, all the bars, casino, everything will be open in that room. Mechanical bull.

Speaker 2:

Mechanical bull is back it just sold, it just sold. Sean's gonna ride it this year. Oh yeah, there you go.

Speaker 4:

Do you?

Speaker 3:

wanna keep going.

Speaker 4:

Yes, so Shania Twain will take the main stage. Well, I guess we should talk about live auction. Yes, because live auction will go on after VIP. It usually takes about an hour, so it's usually about 10 to 11, no, I'm sorry, nine to 10, scratch that. Live auction is usually about nine to 10 and that will take place on the VIP stage after VIP. So definitely go into the live room. It's always entertaining, but you can be doing a mechanical bull.

Speaker 4:

The casino, all the food stations will be open. There'll be a lot to do in the meantime too, and then Shania Twain will take the main stage a little after 10. So after the live auction, everyone will go into the big tent and get ready for Shania, and she will perform till around midnight. At that time we'll also draw for raffle on the main stage too. We raffle everything off, from a park place car to shopping sprees at North Park Plains Capital Debit Card. There's a lot of fun packages you can win there. And then, after Shania Twain, is the after party, which everyone loves. That's when you get your late night food, your breakfast burritos, your cinnamon roll there's nothing better. And then you'll go back into the VIP room where we kicked off the night in Taylor Pace. The dance band will be performing until 2 pm 2 am 2 am.

Speaker 1:

Sorry, wow, I know it's a 24 hour party.

Speaker 4:

I can't even say it right, because that's the one night a year. I say it until 2 am.

Speaker 2:

Okay, one more thing. The parking has gotten so good.

Speaker 1:

Oh good, I have so much better.

Speaker 2:

Tell us about that. How did you? You know it's a lot of people to handle.

Speaker 3:

Well, last year we really promoted ride share and that helps a lot to alleviate so many cars, and we will again follow the same model of encouraging people to ride share. A lot of people take party buses and things like that, so we try and give all of our attendees in advance kind of a no before you go. Here's where you go for ride share, here's where you go if you have, you know, a chartered bus or limo or something like that, and here's how you valet park. So we kind of have it down to a science, hopefully knock on wood and we'll continue that this year.

Speaker 1:

No, you absolutely do. We have quite a bit of equipment with the microphones that we bring, and so we drove our own car and it was really easy. Just go down the road and it was so well organized people directing you, and then the best part was taking a golf cart in to South Ford Park.

Speaker 2:

Yes, yes, so we're so looking forward to doing this again. Thank you so much for having us, you know. We love interviewing people and you guys have been awesome, like we're just. We couldn't be more excited about cattle, parents and the 15th anniversary. Thank you.

Speaker 3:

We're so grateful for your partnership over these last few years.

Speaker 1:

Absolutely. We love it. That's been another episode of the Bubble Lounge. I'm Martha.

Speaker 2:

Jackson and I'm Nellie Shudo, and we'll catch you next time. Bye.
